Third grade science is filled with curiosity and discovery as students come to enjoy science as a process of learning about the world. This year we will learn about interactions, relationships, relative motion, and cause and effect. Third graders observe, classify, predict, measure, and record as they study the movement of the Earth and its moon, learn about forces that move things, and learn about heat and light.
During our third term term of school we will focus on learning the science benchmark that states, "Students will understand that the shape of Earth and the moon are spherical and that Earth rotates on its axis to produce the appearance of the sun and moon moving through the sky." Our first objective will be to describe the appearance of Earth and the moon. Our next objective will be to describe the movement of Earth and the moon and the apparent movement of other bodies through the sky.
We will read many informational texts about the Earth and moon, then synthesize the information learned from those texts by writing an informational text about the moon. In addition, each students will track the phases of the moon during the month of February. We will also go on our first field trip of the year to Clark Planetarium in February where we will see a movie, exhibits, and listen to presentations that will further enhance our knowledge about the Earth and moon.
All in all, this unit is a great way to continue our third grade year in science!
